Sainte Suzanne is rightly classified as one of les plus beaux villages de France – the most beautiful villages of France.
Situated on a promontory inhabited since prehistoric times, Sainte Suzanne is today a quiet, scenic village with buildings dating to the 11th century, when William the Conqueror turned his attentions south and spent four years besieging the town before giving up, making this little known Mayennais village the only place to have withstood the Norman King of England.
The formidable walls of the settlement that now numbers 1,000 inhabitants contain eight round towers – one of which can be seen on the far left side of this image, four square towers and a drawbridge.
Seen here from the surrounding plain the highest building is the lodge dating to 1613, the countryside of the Mayenne departement is as rural now as it was all those centuries ago.
