Approaching Storm in Connemara – Landscape Photography

I wrote a short post recently here on Panoramic Ireland about landscape photography and light.

It struck me one day as I was photographing landscapes in Connemara that the evening’s light was not going to be as good as forecast.

I spend a lot of time photographing in this part of the west of Ireland. The landscape is one of bogs and mountains and sky. Very often the weather is rainy and stormy, this evening as it turned out was no exception.

I should have been looking out at golden sunlight shining across the landscape, highlighting the mountains in the distance and casting shadows across the lake in front of me.

And that got me thinking that this light was as interesting as that traditional landscape photographer’s light.

Here the mountains are given definition by approaching rain falling from the fast-moving low cloud base above.

It didn’t take long for the scene to become unphotographable (is that even a word?) as the rain reached my position, but in those few moments I got some of the best light in which to capture the essence of the Irish landscape.
